What Makes a Good Presentation?

Ashley Ray

Now that you know why you should submit an idea, you’re probably wondering, “What should I talk about? What’s my idea?”

Chiming in on this week’s blog is Aris, our “Facilitator of Good Happenings”. Aris is our in-house presentation expert! Have the jitters? She’ll talk you through it. Trouble with your Powerpoint? She’s your lady!

Here are her tips for what makes a great presentation:

So, what are you all about?

Whether it's about your Great-Aunt Tilda or fixing hotrods, your presentation should be engaging, concise and informative. Whatever the subject, choose points that are entertaining, truthful and which speak to the subject you are covering. The most important thing is that you engage the audience in what you are sharing. Your passion about your subject can be just as interesting to the audience as the subject itself, so don't be afraid to show your true feelings. Laugh, cry or yell, just be interesting.

Just the facts, man.

It helps to find interesting statistics or weird facts that spice up what you already know, such as, "It takes 25 kittens to fill a 5-gallon bucket. I know because…" Shocking? Maybe, but I guarantee they'll all be listening to you, especially if you couple that with great slides!

Search and Research.

No one likes to be wrong. Do your research. You want to share on a subject you're somewhat familiar with already, so you have a solid background, but maybe there's a few points you want to make that need some honing. Just check your facts and their sources.

Practice makes…good.

We're not looking for perfection, but don't come unprepared. It's good to practice and get feedback before you get up there. After you get your presentation together, get in front of a few friends or colleagues and share. This will not only help with timing, but also will get the points situated in your head so that the material flows more smoothly. When the day comes, you'll have an advantage at making the impression you hope to.

Have fun.

It's all about entertainment. When it comes down to it, all we're trying to do here is have a great event and get excited over things. So live it up. Share your passions, share your dreams and don't forget to make it enjoyable for yourself and others.

Well there you have it! What are you waiting for? Dig deep, find your passion and submit your idea today!
